Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a big change. We know because we’ve been there. If you’re unsure where to begin your job search or want to ensure your family is cared for, we have answers.

Here are questions veterans and service members often ask us when getting ready for life after the military…

1. Is finding a job after service difficult?

It can be tough, but it’s not impossible. Most service members find successful civilian careers. In fact, the unemployment rate for veterans is lower than the non-veteran population.

The key is to translate your military experience into skills that civilian employers can understand. You already have traits that companies love-leadership, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic-but it’s about highlighting those skills effectively and getting them in front of the right employer.

We partner with veteran-friendly employers in Indiana who value your military experience and want to support your success. Learn more about our partners here.

2. What kind of job am I qualified for?

The short answer? A lot. Here are a few examples:

  • Logistics and Operations: If you led missions, you can handle supply chains and operations for companies.
  • Technology and Cybersecurity: Tech skills could lead to jobs in IT, cybersecurity, and engineering.
  • Healthcare and Emergency Response: Experience in medical corps can open doors to careers in healthcare or emergency management.

3. When should I start looking for jobs?

The sooner, the better. Ideally, start your job search about 6–18 months before you plan to separate from the military. This gives you time to explore your options, update your resume, and network with potential employers.

4. How can I make sure my benefits are set up correctly?

Navigating benefits like education, healthcare, and housing assistance can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to get them right so you can enjoy the benefits you’ve earned.

We recommend getting started with your Transition Assistance Program counselor. They can help guide you through the process so you can understand and access your benefits. Likewise, a VA Benefits Advisor can help explain your healthcare, disability, education benefits, and more.

Our team members have been through this process too and can help guide you through the fine print and checklists. We’ll also point you to trusted resources to ensure you and your family are getting everything you’re entitled to.

5. Will my next job support my family?

It’s a valid concern. Many veterans worry about finding a job that offers stability, good pay, and benefits. But did you know that veterans may actually earn more than civilians after their military careers?

We work with employers in Indiana who want to hire veterans. They provide competitive salaries, healthcare, retirement plans, and chances for advancement. We’ll help you find employers and jobs that fit your needs. This way, you can build a better future for your family.
