The mission of LinkedIn: connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.

LinkedIn was founded in 2002 in California. As a LinkedIn user for almost 10 years, I have seen significant development in how the platform is used and leveraged for networking. Initially, LinkedIn was utilized to connect professionals, share best practices, and facilitate learning globally, those continue to be critical. Currently, it is for recruitment, to review potential employees’ resumes, share events, research, celebrations, promotions, and opportunities in multiple forms.

Knowing that LinkedIn has become the leading site for finding both employment and employees, more employers than ever are using and engaging potential employees via the LinkedIn platform. LinkedIn is now offering the military community one year of access to LinkedIn Premium at no additional cost. This renders it an extremely valuable platform for transitioning military and veterans in pursuit of their next mission.

Why would this be important? Having LinkedIn Premium allows you access to over 10,000 courses through the LinkedIn Learning platform.

The first course LinkedIn Premium offers for veterans is “LinkedIn for Veterans” the objective is to help veterans build their profile, grow their network, learn new skills, and find job opportunities with LinkedIn Premium Career.

Despite my decade of experience on the platform, I found this extremely helpful, and I was able to learn even more ways to utilize the site.

Key learning points:

  • Explain how to choose the most appropriate profile picture for a LinkedIn profile.
  • Recognize three characteristics of an impactful summary.
  • Identify the most difficult part of a profile for veterans to complete.
  • Recall how to order skills in the skills section of a LinkedIn profile.
  • Summarize three functions of a professional network.
